The “Group work” function can be helpful if the group members should receive different information.

Click on Settings in the upper right corner, then click on Course Administration -> Edit Settings.

Scroll down to “Groups” to check the different possible settings.

Clicking on the question mark will open the “Help”. You can for example if group mode should be forced or not.
