Course Navigation

Moodle Basics

In the following, you will find some information about the basic functions within your Moodle course.
Each course follows the same pattern: You will find the content area (1.), the editing mode (2.), blocks (3.) and the breadcrumbs (4.).

1. Content Area

All your course contents are uploaded to this area and are accessible by the students. Furthermore, you can add and configure activites in this area.

2. The Editing Mode

Unlike students, instructors are able to edit the whole course. In order to do so, you can find the button to enable or disable the editing mode in the corner on the right-hand side.
Now it is possible to upload resources or edit existing ones.

If you click on the gear icon, you will find the follwing five tabs:

The course administration allows you to change any settings of your course. If you would like to reuse the content of your former courses, you can do so by using the import function. Please find more information here.

In this section, it is possible to add users to the course. Regarding the students, there is no need to worry as they will be added to the Moodle course automatically after a successful enrollment. However, you can add student assistants or guest lecturers. You can find more information here.
Furthermore, you can enable the self enrollment function which allows users to access the course by using an enrollment code.

3. Blocks

Course information and functions are displayed in blocks. On the right-hand side, you can usually find blocks referring to the course content. It is possible to add and delete blocks - for more information, please follow this link.

3.1 Block Navigation

This block is similar to a table of content and allows you to navigate within your course.

3.2 Block Settings

With this block you will have a quick overview of general settings, e.g. back up and import settings.

3.3 Text Blocks

Text blocks are simple blocks with text information you provide for the users of the course.

3.4. "Calendar" Block

A calendar is useful to remind your students of upcoming events or deadlines.

3.5 "Download Materials" Block

This block is convenient if your students want to dowload all materials that you provide in your course at once.
More information here: Download Materials

3.6 "Completion Status" Block

The course completion status block shows what has been done towards completing the course. The student and teacher will both see this block.

3.7 "New Badges" Block

This block allows you to award your students after completing certain activities or exercises.
